Navigating Parent Burnout in the Summer

We talk a lot about summer break. But what isn’t talked about nearly enough is the exhaustion that comes with it. For many parents, June through August doesn’t feel like a vacation, it feels like a second shift with no clock-out time. And the guilt that comes along with that is indescribable. But it’s not something you should be guilty for feeling. In fact, it's more common than you think.

If you’re currently hiding in the bathroom, using up your one moment of silence today, know that you are not alone. Parent burnout in the summer is a sign you’re running on empty, not that you’re a bad parent.

Why Summer Burnout Hits Harder

During the school year, there’s a predictable rhythm. And before you know it, summer swoops in and shatters that structure. Suddenly, parents are tasked with becoming a full-time parent alongside their full-time job, and with external factors that could be endless to name, everybody’s circumstances are diverse yet share the same exact bottom line. Sometimes, it's too much. The pressure to create a “magical” summer for your kids creates a high-stress environment. When you mix that pressure with a lack of routine and reduced personal time, burnout is almost inevitable.

Signs You Might Be Burning Out

Burnout shows up differently for everyone, but keep an eye out for these common red fl ags:

1. Emotional exhaustion: feeling completely drained, not even through work, school, or parenting, but even the little things you normally enjoy.

2. Irritability: snapping at the small things that normally wouldn’t bother you

3. Disconnection: feeling like you’re just going through the motions rather than being present

4. The “Guilt” Loop: feeling exhausted, getting frustrated, then feeling guilty for not being “fun” enough.

Low-Demand Strategies to Reclaim Your Summer

If you’re nodding along to everything that’s just been stated, it’s time to lower that bar you’ve drawn in your mind. You don’t need a massive lifestyle switch to fi nd relief. Try starting with these small shifts:

1. Lower the “Entertainment Bar”: your kids don’t need a daily itinerary of theme parks, elaborate crafts, or constant play dates with friends. Boredom is actually clinically studied as a benefi cial pillar for child development. It sparks creativity and independence. It is entirely okay to point toward a box of toys and let them fi gure it out.

2. Establish Quiet Time (Yes, Even For The Older Kids): just because naps are a thing of the past doesn’t necessarily mean a daily pause has to be. Establish a mandatory 45-minute quiet time after lunch where everyone - including you - goes to a designated space for solo, quiet activities (reading, colouring, or an audiobook).

3. Drop the “All-Or-Nothing” Self Care Myth: you probably don't have time for a spa day, and that’s fi ne. Small moments of self-care add up. Drink your morning coffee on the porch alone, put on headphones with your favourite playlist while making dinner, or take just three deep breaths before walking into a room. These small adjustments go much further than most people expect.

A Quick Reminder

Your kids don’t need a perfect summer; they need a regulated, happy parent. Taking care of your own mental health isn’t selfi sh. It's the foundation of a healthy household. If the weight feels too heavy to carry on your own this season, remember that reaching out for professional support can give you the tools and space you deserve in order to breathe again. We are always here to help you navigate the tricky seasons of parenthood.
