WHO YOU ARE
Who are first responders?
First responders and trauma-exposed professionals are individuals whose work regularly places them in high-stress, crisis, or traumatic situations while supporting the safety, health, and wellbeing of others.
This can include:
Police officers
Firefighters
Paramedics & EMS workers
Emergency dispatchers (911 operators)
Nurses, physicians, and emergency healthcare workers
Correctional officers
Military members and veterans
Child protection workers
Crisis workers and victim services staff
Search and rescue personnel
Funeral professionals
Teachers, social workers, and frontline community support staff exposed to ongoing trauma
These professionals often witness or experience critical incidents, loss, grief, violence, medical emergencies, or ongoing emotional stress as part of their roles. Over time, this exposure can impact mental health, relationships, sleep, stress levels, and overall wellbeing.
At Arms Open Counselling, we provide trauma-informed therapy to support individuals navigating the emotional effects of frontline and trauma-exposed work.
SUPPORT THAT MEETS YOU WHERE YOU ARE
What brings first responders to therapy?
First responders often spend so much time caring for others, managing emergencies, and pushing through high-pressure situations that their own needs can get pushed aside. Over time, the impact can build quietly or all at once.
Therapy can offer space to process what you have been carrying, better understand your stress responses, and develop practical support for both work and life outside of work.
YOU MAY BE NOTICING
“I feel like I am always on, even when I am home.”
“I am exhausted, but I still cannot fully relax.”
“I do not feel like myself anymore.”
“The job is affecting my relationships and daily life.”
“I have been carrying too much for too long.”
You do not have to hold it all alone. Reaching out for support can be a meaningful first step toward healing.
Areas of support for first responders
HOW WE CAN HELP
First responders can carry experiences that stay with them long after a shift ends. Therapy can help you safely process trauma, reduce overwhelm, and begin to feel more grounded again.
Trauma and PTSD support
If you feel more reactive, disconnected, or emotionally exhausted than you used to, therapy can help you understand what is underneath those responses and how to move forward.
Anger, irritability, emotional shutdown
When the pressure of the work starts to affect your mind, body, and relationships, therapy offers space to slow down, recover, and rebuild healthy coping strategies.
Burnout and chronic stress
The impact of frontline work often reaches beyond the workplace. We support first responders who want to strengthen communication, reconnect with loved ones, and feel more present in their relationships.
Relationship and family challenges
Living in a constant state of readiness can make it hard to relax, sleep, or feel present at home. We help you understand these responses and build tools to manage them.
Anxiety and hypervigilance
Whether you are actively serving, on leave, or adjusting after retirement, therapy can support you through periods of change, uncertainty, and loss of routine or identity.
Identity, transition, and life after service

FAQs
Is therapy confidential?
1
Yes. Therapy is confidential, with a few legal and ethical exceptions that your therapist will review with you. Our goal is to provide a safe, respectful space where you can speak openly.
Do I need a diagnosis to start theray?
2
No. You do not need a diagnosis to begin. Many first responders reach out because they are feeling overwhelmed, burned out, disconnected, or simply not like themselves.
Do you offer virtual sessions?
3
Yes. Arms Open Counselling offers virtual therapy across Ontario, as well as in-person therapy in Smithville, Beamsville, and Dunnville.
How do I know if therapy is the right fit?
4
A free 15-minute consultation can help you ask questions, share what you are looking for, and decide whether the therapist and approach feel right for you.
Will talking about my trauma make it worse?
5
Not when it’s done in a safe, supported way. Avoiding trauma can often keep symptoms like anxiety, anger, or intrusive thoughts feeling stuck. At Arms Open Counselling, our trauma-informed therapists move at your pace—helping you build grounding and coping tools first, then gently exploring your experiences in a way that feels manageable, not overwhelming.
