Practice What You Preach - Arms Open Counselling Team Takes on Yoga Meditation
Grounding Ourselves to Better Support Others
At Arms Open, we dedicate our days to hold space for others. It is a privilege we don’t take lightly, but we know that in order to deliver the best service to our communities, we have to stay grounded ourselves. That’s why last week, our team traded desks for yoga mats at Breathe Wellness in Smithville. We spent an hour in guided yin yoga meditation led by our wonderful instructor, Jamette, but it slowly became something much more than just a ‘team bonding’ experience.
Why Movement Matters
Why combine movement with a staff meeting? The connection between the body and mind isn't just a wellness trend; it’s clinically proven and a wellness lifestyle that has existed for hundreds of years. Yoga movement helps regulate the nervous system, lowering cortisol and allowing the "rest and digest" part of our brain to take over. When we move together, we aren't just stretching muscles, we are syncing our energy. It's the perfect release after a long day, and reconnects the mind and body in unison again.
Building a Stronger Team
And why is bonding so important in a counselling team like Arms Open? Because a supported team provides better support. Stepping out of our professional roles and into a shared meditation practice builds a level of trust that translates directly into how we collaborate on client care. By prioritizing our own mental health, we ensure that when we sit across from you, we are fully present, refreshed, and energized. Supporting local gems like Breathe Wellness reminds us that wellness is a village effort.
Connection Off The Mat
Beyond the mat, there was a special kind of bonding that occurred, mixing the roots of our office with its new growth. Long-term staff shared stories of the early days with new staff, while our newest members brought fresh perspectives on the future of mental health. These conversations remind us that while we all have different roles from administrative support to clinical care, we are all moved by the same mission. Seeing these different generations of the Arms Open family connect over tea and nibbles and shared reflection proved that our strength lies in our community.
The Power of Pause
The biggest takeaway from our hour at Breathe Wellness was the power of the pause. In a world that demands constant ‘doing’, there is strength in simply ‘being’, even if that's just for an hour. Yoga isn’t the only way to ground yourself however; this can take place in a workout class, a walk through Smithville’s downtown, a hike in Rockway Conservation Area, or a session in our office. With this experience, we encourage you to find that pocket of peace in your busy lives this week.
